This time last year we were gearing up for the 49th Annual Race Weekend. Plans were also beginning for the 50th Anniversary Extravaganza we had hoped to deliver. Then Covid. Then no 2020 Figawi. The first cancellation since the event began in 1972.
As the summer went on, organizations adapted and figured out how to hold safe sailing regattas. For Figawi though, it was decided we would not try for the fall but put all our resources and energy into the 50th! It became more clear towards the end of 2020 that this was also in jeopardy.
We sent a poll to our past years entrants with the goal of learning what aspects of Figawi Race Weekend was important to them. We wanted to know if we held the race which we knew was possible, would people enter without the usual format that includes Nantucket. The overwhelming response was YES! People just wanted to get on the water and have some great competitive racing.
After conversations with officials and stakeholders, it was clear that the usual Figawi schedule would need to be amended. Particularly as it pertains to permits and logistics in Nantucket. Per the Governor of MA, activities organized to draw together large crowds must continue to remain closed until the last step of Phase IV. With or without organized shoreside events on Nantucket, we are responsible for our participants on the docks also.
Going back to our roots and getting on the water is our focus. We will have two amazing days of racing this year. The Saturday race will be the usual format: Pursuit, Long Distance, spinnaker/non-spinnaker, and broken into divisions. The Sunday race will be similar but not repetitive.
We have awesome new sponsors and amazing returning sponsors. The famous Figawi Merchandise will be available to purchase. Probably even at multiple locations in Hyannis over the weekend in addition to online.
Grab a mooring at Hyannis Yacht Club for the weekend or a slip in Hyannis Marina. are so many great restaurants along the waterfront of Hyannis Harbor and up on Main Street. Bring your family or crew and book an Airbnb for the weekend.
Plan on post-race fun at TBD establishments that have a long history with Figawi (within the guidelines of course). Merch, giveaways, awards, jokes…don’t miss out!
