50th Annual Figawi Race Weekend

Celebrating 50 years of Figawi –
Going back to our roots

Sailing is a Good Fit

Unlike some sports that have struggled to adapt and remain competitive under pandemic safety guidelines, sailing doesn’t face quite the same challenges. First, there are no crowds on the water unless you get in a spaghetti mess at the start. Second, Captains can call upon their “covid” circle of friends and family members to assemble a crew. (Bonus – less “extras” looking for a ride and ticket to the party!) Most importantly, you don’t need to get to the bar to enjoy your favorite Mt Gay Rum drink while critiquing the days’ race performance (calmly of course), you can begin once you cross the finish line!

Let’s get Sailing!

Given all those factors, it was an easy decision to go ahead with the on-the-water portion of the 50th Annual Figawi Race. In 1972 Figawi was born out of the spirit of camaraderie and competition between sailors. It is fitting that we are able to celebrate 50 years later in a similar fashion. Not only have we decided to go ahead with the 2021 Figawi Race on Saturday, May 29th we decided to add one on Sunday! Figawi’s first-ever 2 day pursuit, long-distance regatta. So while we will not be able to spend the weekend roaming the docks of Nantucket Boat Basin, or standing in line at the Chicken Box, we will be able to spend the time enjoying Nantucket Sound!

First ever 2 day racing series

The Figawi Race Committee led by Principal Race Officer Tom Duggan will be orchestrating the finest PURSUIT, LONG DISTANCE races for you to enjoy. The GOAL is to give you the kind of race day you’ve come to expect Figawi to deliver on Saturday, and then DO IT AGAIN on Sunday! Be sure to read the Notice of Race for preliminary information. The rest of the details will be provided in the Sailing Instructions soon, but you can expect the start and finish areas to be in the vicinity of the Hyannisport Jetty, the courses to be similar in mileage to the usual Figawi Race, and PRIZES for each day and OVERALL!

Nantucket Again in 2022

Now on to the hard decisions. SAFETY and COMPLIANCE are dictating the possibility of shoreside events. If you have participated in Figawi, then you know the docks of Nantucket Boat Basin are usually the best party of the weekend. No matter how we looked at it, there was no compliant way to include Nantucket this year. For almost 50 years Figawi and Nantucket officials have cultivated a relationship of mutual respect and support. We look forward to returning to Nantucket in 2022.

Ready to plan as regulations allow

If the mandates change between now and Memorial Day Weekend, we are ready! There are many great venues along Hyannis harbor that are excited to be part of Figawi. Of course, we have nothing planning yet, however, we could have an awards presentation or maybe even a cocktail party?! Who knows! What we do know is we are EXCITED to get on the water, we are BEYOND READY to see our Figawi friends, and we are HOPEFUL to celebrate the 50th with all of you! There will be awards presented to daily winners and overall winners therefore more chance to take home a coveted Figawi Trophy.

Easy Logistics

As always, captains can make arrangements with Hyannis Yacht Club for a mooring or Hyannis Marina for a slip. We will provide specific updates as soon as we have them. Make sure you receive the latest but signing up on Figawi.com and through registration on yachtscoring.com. The flat fee registration includes 2 days of racing and the skipper’s bag that includes the 2021 Figawi Burgee and Mt Gay Hats. If we are able to plan any social events, the admission for them will be a la carte.

Figawi Merchandise

Have you checked out figawigear.com? There are masked Figawi logo sweatshirts, long and short sleeve t-shirts, 2020 burgees, and more. The store is currently getting stocked up with 2021 merch that will be available soon! We are hopeful to have some onsite merch sales over Memorial Day Weekend but the details are not clear yet. For now, you can order online and we will ship to you. If you would prefer to pick up locally (mid-cape area) we can make that happen also.
